You usually don't have to play Dark Souls 3 before your hero meets his painful death, something which is inevitable in this game. The key thing you have to keep in mind when playing the game for long enough is - don't let the frustration of all your deaths make you break your keyboard in half. As it is with the other games of this punishing series, often the starting hours are the toughest, when you haven't worked out the game's mechanics and rhythm yet.

Here are a few tips and tricks that will help you make this game a better experience for you. Some of the tips are for people who have never played a game like Dark Souls 3 before, others are for people who have played Souls, but want to lock onto what the new edition is about.

How to Spend Souls

As in the past Souls games, there's just one type of currency - souls. You get them by killing enemies, or using items that are more-or-less freeze dried bad-guy essence. Souls are used to buy items from merchants and upgrading your weapon, as well as when you level up. Which means that you'll need to think strategically about which parts of your hero you want to improve, especially after having downed a boss.

The price of leveling doesn't change depending on the stats you pick, only the level you're currently at, meaning the price increases with each level. This makes choosing stat upgrades kind of tricky. There's no going back to improve your other stats cheaply a few hours down the game.

Recovering Lost Souls

This is not something new for people who have played acrtion game online on MAC, however, if you are new you should know what happens when you die. You lose the souls you carry, but keep the items. When you die, the souls are left where you perished, so you can return to that spot and pick them up when you respawn. But if you die again on the way to there, you've lost them for good. If you're feeling completely disheartened, not being able to pass a certain boss, you can grind out experience to an extent.

Leveling Up

The first place to level at is Firelink Shrine. If you're stuck at the first boss and want to buff up a little to get a better chance at going at him, you're unfortunately out of luck, the Firelink Shrine is after the first boss. However, if you've made it past, you can head to the Firelink Shrine and talk to the character at the centre of the safe zone. She'll be the one improving your character's stats from, now on whenever you have enough souls to spend.
